Welsh Lib Dems call for more Childcare support for families

Today (28th November) in the Senedd, the Welsh Liberal Democrats have called on the Welsh Government to establish a permanent Childcare Allowance.

Wales currently has some of the highest childcare costs in the world, according to an Oxfam Cymru report over a quarter of surveyed parents spend over £900 every month on care.

In their recently released childcare report, the Welsh Lib Dems proposed piloting a Childcare Allowances that would see direct payments to parents of children from when they are nine months old and up to school age.

Commenting, Jane Dodds MS said:

“Ask any parent or guardian in Wales about their experiences of getting childcare and I’m sure you’ll hear a fair share of horror stories.

Families across the country are being faced with an almost impossible task of finding affordable and easily accessible childcare, with many being forced to choose between forking out thousands of pounds or quitting work.

This shouldn’t be the case, childcare must be affordable and accessible to all.

As part of our recent childcare report, we recommended the piloting of a Childcare allowance scheme. Now it’s time for the Welsh Government to stand by Welsh families by following our recommendations and establish a permanent Childcare Allowance.”
