Carmarthen Solicitor selected to advise Children’s Commissioner for Wales

Angela Killa, Director in the Family team at JCP Solicitors and based in the firm’s Carmarthen office, has recently been appointed to the advisory panel for the Children’s Commissioner for Wales – a prestigious role which will see her provide expert advice and guidance, shaping the future policies that safeguard children across the country.

Established in 2001 to protect the rights of children in Wales, the Children’s Commissioner for Wales is advised by a panel of children and a panel of adults who are experts in their field. Angela will provide a sounding board for the Commissioner on complex issues surrounding children’s rights, welfare, and policy development.

The selection process to the panel was highly competitive, requiring those interested to demonstrate strong knowledge of issues affecting children and young people in Wales today. The Children’s Commissioner for Wales, Rocio Cifuentes MBE, selected panel members who would be best placed to support the delivery of her three-year plan to improve children’s welfare and influence policy-makers at the highest level.

Angela, Director at JCP Solicitors, said: “The Children’s Commissioner for Wales champions the rights of children and young people, and I look forward to bringing my 22 years’ experience in Family Law to the panel. By working with the Children’s Commissioner, I hope to provide expert advice across all areas of law impacting child welfare.

“The three-year strategy from 2023-2026 outlines the Commissioner’s vision for Wales: a nation where every child and young person understands their rights and knows the Children’s Commissioner will stand up for those rights. We will also work to encourage children and young people to access any support they need, listening to and speaking up for children in Wales. What’s more, Angela has recently been shortlisted for the Resolution Awards for Family Justice after being appointed as a member of the Resolution Children’s Committee. Aiming to protect children in the family justice system, the committee strives to put children at the centre of family justice.

Angela continued: “I have long been committed to promoting a constructive approach to family issues that considers the needs of the whole family, and so I’m delighted to be shortlisted for the Family Justice Award.

“I now look forward to shaping and influencing the future approach to matters concerning children as a member of the Children Committee for Resolution, and in my role advising the Children’s Commissioner for Wales.”
