Dyfed-Powys Police received a report of a fire at Trimsaran Rugby Club, near Kidwelly in Carmarthenshire, at around 6.15pm on Saturday, 23 May 2026. A storage container used to keep equipment at the club’s ground is believed to have been set alight deliberately.
An 11-year-old boy was trapped inside the burning container. He was rescued by members of the club who were present at the ground at the time. He was taken to Morriston Hospital in Swansea with serious injuries and remains in a stable condition.
Three fire stations were mobilised to the scene. Crews from Llanelli, Pont-iets and Kidwelly attended and used breathing apparatus, hose reel jets, hydraulic spreaders, ladders and thermal imaging cameras to extinguish the blaze. The fire had spread from the container to a neighbouring property, affecting its roof space. Crews left the scene at 7.56pm.

A 13-Year-Old Arrested on Suspicion of Attempted Murder
Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed that a 13-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of arson and attempted murder in connection with the incident. The boy has been released on conditional bail while the investigation continues.
A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police said:
“Dyfed-Powys Police received a report of a fire at Trimsaran Rugby Club on Saturday, May 23 at around 6.15pm. A container was allegedly set alight deliberately, causing extensive damage to the container and its contents. An 11-year-old boy suffered serious injuries during the incident and remains in a stable condition in hospital. A 13-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of arson and attempted murder. They have been released on conditional bail. The investigation is ongoing.”
The Club Pays Tribute to Those Who Acted
Trimsaran RFC issued a statement on their Facebook page in the aftermath of the incident, confirming the damage to their equipment and paying tribute to those who intervened.
“I am sure that a lot of people are aware that there was an issue on our fields on Saturday afternoon where one of our storage containers were set on fire causing a lot of damage to our equipment. The main thing is that a young boy was trapped inside and only got out due to the heroism of some of our club members.”
The club thanked both its members and the emergency services for their response to the blaze.
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service Statement
A spokesperson for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the response to the incident.
“At 6.15pm on Saturday, May 23, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews from Llanelli, Pont-iets and Kidwelly Fire Stations were mobilised to an incident at Trimsaran Rugby Social Club. The crews responded to a fire involving one shipping container used for storage. The fire had spread to a neighbouring property and affected its roof space. The fire is believed to have been started deliberately. The crew left the scene at 7.56pm.”
The 11-year-old boy injured in the incident remains in a stable condition in Morriston Hospital, Swansea. Carmarthenshire News Online will update this article as the investigation progresses.
