Glangwili Hospital Ward Closed Due to High-Contagion Scabies Outbreak

A ward at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen has been forced to close its doors following an outbreak of crusted scabies, a rare, highly contagious variant of the skin condition.

The Hywel Dda University Health Board confirmed that Steffan Ward is currently locked down to admissions while specialist teams manage the situation “in line with established infection prevention and control procedures.”

The health board has moved quickly to identify contacts, confirming that all patients and staff members on the ward, including those displaying no symptoms, have been informed and offered immediate preventative treatment.

Local Surge Driving Hospital Outbreaks

Significantly, health officials revealed that this is not an isolated incident, noting a wider, regional rise in scabies cases across Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, and Ceredigion which is directly contributing to hospital-level outbreaks.

A spokesperson for Hywel Dda University Health Board stated:

“The situation will be kept under review, and the ward will reopen in line with infection prevention and control guidance when it is safe to do so. Enhanced monitoring, treatment of identified contacts, and ongoing support from specialist teams have been put in place.”

What is Crusted Scabies?

While standard scabies is a relatively common skin irritation caused by tiny burrowing mites, crusted scabies (historically referred to as Norwegian scabies) is a much more severe form.

The Mechanism: Unlike standard scabies, where an individual might host 10 to 15 mites, crusted scabies causes a scaly rash and thickened crusts of skin that can contain thousands of mites and eggs.

Who it Affects: It typically develops in individuals with compromised or weakened immune systems, though health officials note this is not always the case.

Contagion Risk: Because of the sheer volume of mites present in the skin crusts, it is incredibly easy to transmit through both direct physical contact and contaminated clothing, bedding, or furniture.

Symptoms to Watch For

Public health officials are urging local residents to be aware of the signs of both standard and crusted variations:

Standard Scabies: Intense itching (frequently worse at night) and a raised rash or spots. It commonly targets the skin between the fingers, around the wrists, under the arms, and around the waist or groin.

Crusted Scabies: A distinct, crusted, flaky rash that most often manifests on the elbows, knees, hands, and feet.

What Should You Do?

If you or a family member suspect you have symptoms of scabies, the NHS advises treating it quickly to halt community spread.

Contact Your GP or Pharmacist: Scabies is highly treatable with prescription insecticidal creams or oral medications.

Treat the Whole Household: Because symptoms can take up to eight weeks to appear, everyone in a household must be treated at the same time, even if they aren’t itching.

Wash Bedding and Clothing: Wash all clothes, bedding, and towels used in the previous 4 days at 60°C (140°F) on the first day of treatment to kill the mites.

Carmarthenshire News Online will update this story as the health board provides further updates on Steffan Ward’s reopening status.
