Intrepid ghost hunters enjoy night of frights at Kidwelly Castle

A wonderfully atmospheric evening of ghost stories hosted by 3 ladies of Cadw was enjoyed by an intrepid few at Kidwelly castle on Monday (Oct 30).

The horrendous weather and flooded roads must have prevented many from attending, and the setting of within a tower comfortably accommodated the 12 or so of the 27 tickets sold.

All  attendees had a “ring-side” seat.

People  had been encouraged to dress warmly and bring chairs, and were provided with a hot drink and an excellent choice of home-made cakes and biscuits.

The 3 ladies, obvious enthusiasts, took turns to tell us of the ghostly tales of Kidwelly – all stories shared by many individuals – the same visions but were not always linked – the strangest being the half-woman who had been seen by several unconnected witnesses on different occasions. It was not until years later that this was explained by historians……but I won’t spoil it.

We were also treated to some statistics, not least that in 2020 Kidwelly castle was voted the best in Wales, and the 4th best in the UK. West Wales is supposed to be the most haunted area of Wales, and sitting there in the dimly lit tower, with my skin breaking out in goosebumps hearing the stories, I can well believe it.

Keep an eye out for events at the castle – I have attended open air theatres there which are usually riotous fun, and the ghost stories are an annual treat for visitors and locals alike.
