Exciting Plans for New Town Centre Museum and Creative Quarter in Llanelli

Llanelli could soon boast a new town centre museum and Creative Quarter thanks to an ambitious vision from local artists and volunteers. The group behind the initiative, the John Street Project, aims to transform and beautify John Street, acquiring the old, empty Post Office building to create a home for local art and history.

Responding to Community Concerns

The proposal comes after public criticism that Llanelli town centre feels “unattractive” and “unloved.” The John Street Project hopes its plans will breathe new life into the area, making it a vibrant destination for locals and visitors alike.

Funding the Dream

Project Secretary Tara Fisher confirmed that a £150,000 National Heritage Lottery grant is being sought to help purchase and convert the former Post Office. The building includes a Grade II Listed section that would be carefully restored as part of the project.
“We want artists to know that the museum will be a home for local people of talent,” Tara said. “We cannot stress this enough — this is vital. And if everything goes smoothly, and we get extra funding, we would like to run the museum ourselves.”

Transformative Features Planned

Visitors to John Street could be greeted by a decorative archway highlighting where other artists and creative businesses are located in the area.

The plans include:

  • A multi-functional exhibition space with moveable walls, enabling large events and courses.

  • A bookable artist studio for local and visiting creatives.

  • Potential for a small artist shop, gift shop, and tourist office.

  • A community café located in the former Post Office.

Greener, More Welcoming Street

Environmental improvements are central to the vision. Planters with bee- and butterfly-friendly flowers will brighten the street. Local supporters will be invited to “adopt a planter” with their names displayed in recognition of their contribution.

A striking feature of the plan is a £25,000 French wind turbine tree, similar to the one on the Place de la Concorde in Paris.
“What an exciting prospect to have these trees, one in Paris and one in John Street, Llanelli,” Tara said.

Crowdfunding and Job Creation

The project is actively seeking donations via crowdfunding and hopes to employ a full-time supervisor along with two part-time staff to run the museum and keep the space thriving.

Better Access to the Town Centre

Linked to the project is a proposal for a dedicated town centre bus service, offering unlimited day tickets for just £1 per person — making Llanelli’s revitalised heart more accessible to all.
