Safety, Regulation and Enforcement

Sanjit’s death highlights the vulnerability of e-bike/scooter riders on the roadways and has prompted local officials to demand better regulations and safety measures to ensure that e-bikers are better protected while commuting as well as ways of tackling irresponsible and improper use of e-scooters in the road which have led to a number of serious incidents involving e-bikes/scooters in the past.

Deputy Mayor of Llanelli, Councillor Shaun Greaney, has reiterated his concerns regarding the unsafe use of e-scooters and e-bikes in the town, particularly among young people following the tragic death of Sanjit Evans.

Cll Greaney expressed his deepest condolences for the family and friends of Sanjit Evans Speaking to Carmarthenshire News Online Cllr Greaney also said that he is urging both parents and authorities to take proactive measures to monitor the use of escooters and e-bikes and ensure the safety of all community members.

In Wales, the use of privately owned e-scooters on public roads, pavements, and cycle paths is illegal. Dyfed-Powys Police have emphasised that riding these devices in public spaces can result in fines, penalty points on driving licenses, and even disqualification for new drivers.

Despite these regulations, there has been a noticeable increase in e-scooter-related injuries in South Wales, indicating a growing need for public education and stricter enforcement.

Councillor Greaney is calling for collaborative efforts involving parents, local authorities, and the government to enhance public awareness, enforce existing laws, and develop comprehensive safety regulations.

Such measures aim to prevent accidents and ensure that the adoption of e-scooters and e-bikes contributes positively to sustainable transportation without compromising public safety.
