Team Evans takes on Long Course Weekend to raise funds for Prince Philip chemo unit

Team Evans – a fabulous fundraising team of over 30 family and friends – is taking on The Wales 5k running event at Long Course Weekend on 2nd July to raise funds for the chemotherapy unit in Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli.

Last August triathlete Wayne Evans was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer with further cancers in four secondary areas. Wayne has always trained and competed in events and was due to do Ironman Wales in Tenby last September, but sadly this did not happen due to his diagnosis.

Incredibly, despite his diagnosis, Wayne completed the Swansea and Llanelli Sprint triathlons later that year as part of a team where he walked or ran the 5k race.

This year, Wayne and his supporters have decided to take on The Wales 5k to raise funds for the chemotherapy unit as a thank you for the outstanding care they have provided.

The team were provided with free places at the event by Activity Wales and Hywel Dda Health Charities, the official charity of Hywel Dda University Health Board. A group of supporters will also be following alongside in support of the runners.

In addition, other participants are supporting the fundraiser by buying T-shirts and donating.

Charlotte Evans, Wayne’s wife, said: “The team at the chemo unit have supported us since the end of August. They are incredible and deserve as much recognition as possible.

“The last full event that Wayne took part in was the Long Course Weekend last year: he started to get obvious symptoms by the time of the event and sadly went downhill from there.

“Wayne is such a popular man and we are thrilled to see so many people supporting the fundraiser. This is going to be an emotional one for him as it would be a year since his last full event. But we hope to make it a great day where we come together as a team and achieve something really special.”

Tara Nickerson, Fundraising Manager at Hywel Dda Health Charities, said: “We want to say a massive good luck and thank you to the amazing Team Evans! The funds you raise will make a really positive difference to the patients and staff at Prince Philip chemotherapy unit. We look forward to cheering you on!”
