Politicians Pay Tribute to Llangennech County Councillor who Passed away Following Battle with Cancer

Politicians including Llanelli MP Dame Nia Griffith have paid tribute to Llangennech County Councillor Gary Jones who passed away on Tuesday 2th May after a battle with cancer.

Gary was a Labour councillor for the ward who fought for the community on numerous issues like health, education and the environment. He was well known to this news outlet as someone who did his best for his community. In August 2020 Gary helped emergency services evacuate part of the village following the derailment and explosion of a train carrying fuel.

He campaigned tirelessly for Dame Nia Griffith MP and Lee Waters MS securing them their seats in Parliament and the Senedd.

Griffith expressed her heartfelt sympathies to Gary’s family

Dame Nia Griffith MP wrote: “We are all deeply saddened by the loss of Cllr Gary Robert Jones and I want to offer my heartfelt sympathy to his wife Cara and daughters Molly and Rowan.

“Gary was very much loved by people across the community. A man of strong socialist principles, he was absolutely devoted to improving people’s lives and had a wonderful way of bringing people together.

“he was an inspiration and a joy to be with and an example to us all, whether working on serious matters or throwing himself into more light-hearted community events . He so often went the extra mile and worked behind the scenes to support people or resolve issues.

“We have lost a very dear friend and a great community champion, and he will be sorely missed.”

Lee Waters MS wrote: “Gary Robert Jones always made me laugh. He was such a warm, kind and caring man. Not what you’d associate with the hard business of steelwork really. Ebbw Vale to his core, Llangennech focused till the end.

He really was a public servant in its truest sense. But for all the nice things I could say about him in politics the thing that really struck you about Gary is how deeply he loved his family. And I can only imagine how much they’ll miss him. I know I will.”

Gary campaigned to save children’s playgrounds, improve flood defences and to save the accident and emergency service at Prince Philip hospital.

Posting on social media Gary’s family wrote: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gary Robert Jones, a beloved husband, father, uncle, campaigner, and dedicated socialist, who left us on Tuesday, 27th May 2025, at Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli.

“Gary had bravely battled pancreatic cancer for three years, remaining active and engaged in his community and passions until very recently. His life was marked by commitment, kindness, and an unwavering dedication to the people he served and loved.

“He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Cara; his daughters Molly and Rowen; sister Dawn; brother David; and son-in-law Matt. Born and raised in Beaufort, Gwent, Gary followed in his father Bob’s footsteps into the steelworks at Ebbw Vale as a tin plater. His early years were characterized by hard work, a fierce sense of justice, and a love for rugby, military history, and reading.

“After the closure of the Ebbw Vale steelworks, Gary and his family relocated to Llangennech, embracing their new community with passion and dedication. He served as a Labour Councillor on the Llangennech and Bryn Community Council, including a year as chair, and was an active member of Carmarthenshire County Council. His tireless campaigning, hands-on approach, and genuine care for his constituents made him a respected figure across the ward and beyond.

“Gary was known for his good humour, modesty, and generosity. Whether attending litter picks, problem-solving for residents, or simply offering a listening ear, he was always there for his community. His friends from Beaufort, Trostre, Laugharne, and across the country will remember him fondly for his warmth and insightful conversations on a wide range of subjects.”

Many have expressed their admiration for his kindness and dedication. Jayne Collins shared, “I will miss you so much, Gary. Always such a lovely man and one of my best friends.” Ben Taylor recalled, “Gary was such a kind and generous man, a privilege to know him.” Neville Gilasbey remembered him as “a true gentleman,” and others shared heartfelt condolences for his family.

His colleagues and constituents alike will mourn the loss of a man who fought valiantly against illness and who stood as a pillar of strength and integrity in his community. His contributions to Llangennech and Carmarthenshire will be remembered with gratitude.

The family and friends of Gary Jones will carry forward his legacy of kindness, service, and compassion. His gentle spirit, modesty, and unwavering commitment to social justice leave a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Rest in peace, Gary. You will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
