Volunteers Help Prepare Prince Philip Memorial Garden for Remembrance Day

Volunteers have been helping to refresh the Memorial Garden at Hywel Dda University Health Board’s Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli ahead of Remembrance Day (Sunday, 8 November).

The garden was created to provide a peaceful outdoor space for patients, families, staff and visitors. It gives people somewhere to step away from busy hospital areas, reflect, remember loved ones and spend time outdoors. Over the years, it has become an important part of the hospital grounds for many people who use or visit the site.

Gardening volunteers have been clearing weeds, maintaining planting areas and cleaning garden furniture. Their work has helped make the space more welcoming ahead of this important occasion.

Kat Davies, Future Workforce Engagement Officer said: “The Prince Philip Memorial Garden is a valued space for patients, families, staff and visitors. We are grateful to our volunteers for the time, care and commitment they have given to helping maintain and improve the garden. Working alongside our volunteers, we will continue to care for the garden through ongoing planting, maintenance and seasonal improvements so it can be enjoyed by everyone who visits for years to come. Will be recruiting more volunteer gardeners in 2027.”

We would like to thank all our volunteers for the time, care and commitment they continue to give to improving our hospital grounds. Over the past six months, the team has helped improve several green spaces across the hospital grounds. They first focused on the Reflection Garden, carrying out restoration and maintenance work before turning their attention to the Prince Philip Memorial Garden.

Their efforts have helped create welcoming and well-maintained spaces for patients, families, staff and visitors to enjoy.

Access to green spaces can make a real difference to people’s experience of the hospital environment. The garden offers a place for reflection, remembrance and quiet moments throughout the year and provides much more than a place to sit outdoors. Patients and families can use the space to relax and reflect during what can often be a difficult time. Visitors can take a moment away from busy wards, while staff can enjoy some quiet time outdoors during their breaks.

The volunteering team will continue to care for the garden through ongoing planting, maintenance and seasonal improvements to help keep the space welcoming and accessible for everyone who uses it.
