“Action needed from Welsh Government” says Sustrans Cymru ahead of Roads Review announcement

Sustrans Cymru Director, Christine Boston has issued a statement ahead of tomorrow’s Roads Review announcement by Welsh Government as follows:

“We hope that Welsh Government will use this opportunity to prioritise more sustainable and environmentally conscious means of travel for everyone in Wales, for our health and our future.

Our work in communities across the country has shown that alternative and more sustainable methods of transport – like walking, wheeling, and cycling – can offer people a real alternative to private vehicles, whether you live in an urban area or in rural Wales. Everyone’s transport needs are different, which is why we must try to provide more options for people to make better choices.

If we’re serious about meeting the climate crisis challenge, we need to become a society that supports multi-modal transport. If we want people to walk, wheel, or cycle alongside using public transport, we need continued investment in improving infrastructure that supports that.

Wales has some of the UK’s worst air pollution rates, our streets and roads are already too congested. Building more roads isn’t the answer. That’s why Sustrans is committed to supporting the work of Welsh Government and our partners to help people be confident in getting out of their cars, to supporting people to choose healthier and more sustainable ways of travelling.”

“Angen gweithrediad gan Lywodraeth Cymru” medd Sustrans Cymru cyn cyhoeddiad Arolygiad Ffyrdd

Dyma ddatganiad gan Gyfarwyddwr Sustrans Cymru, Christine Boston, cyn cyhoeddiad Llywodraeth Cymru ar yr Arolygiad Ffyrdd a ddisgwylir prynhawn yfory:

“Rydym yn gobeithio bydd Llywodraeth Cymru yn cymryd y cyfle yma i flaenoriaethau moddion mwy cynaliadwy ac ecogyfeillgar o deithio i bawb yng Nghymru, er lles ein hiechyd a’n dyfodol.

Mae’n waith yng nghymunedau ar draws y wlad wedi dangos gall foddion arall, mwy cynaliadwy o drafnidiaeth – fel cerdded, olwyno, a seiclo – cynnig i bobl dewis arall wirioneddol i gerbydau preifat, ai’ch bod chi’n byw mewn ardal ddinesig neu yng nghefn gwlad Cymru. Mae anghenion trafnidiaeth pawb yn wahanol, dyna pam fod angen i ni gynnig mwy o opsiynau er mwyn i bobl gwneud dewisiadau gwell.

Os ydyn o ddifrif am her yr argyfwng hinsawdd, mae angen i ni symud dod yn gymdeithas sy’n cefnogi teithio amlfodd. Os ydyn ni eisiau pobl i gerdded, olwyno, neu seiclo wrth ymyl â defnyddio trafnidiaeth gyhoeddus, rydym angen buddsoddiad parhaol mewn gwella isadeiledd sy’n cynorthwyo hynny.

Mae gan Gymru rhai o’r cyfraddau llygredd aer gwaethaf yn y DU, mae’n strydoedd a hewlydd yn barod yn orlawn. Nid adeiladu mwy o ffyrdd yw’r ateb. Dyna pam mae Sustrans yn ymroddedig at gefnogi’r gwaith gan Lywodraeth Cymru a’n partneriaid i helpu pobl bod yn hyderus wrth adael eu ceir, i gefnogi pobl i ddewis ffyrdd iachach a
