Crowds gather for Kidwelly War Memorial Rededication Service

Exactly one hundred years to the day and time of the unveiling of the Kidwelly War memorial, a rededication service was held at 5pm on Saturday 27 July 2024.

The well attended service was led by Fr Jim Flanagan – Reverend Jim Flanagan having been recently promoted as LMA Dean of the United Benefice of Bro Cydweli.

Amongst the congregation were representatives from branches of the Royal British Legion, families related to the fallen, local dignitaries including Kidwelly Town Council’s Mayor, deputy & consort, and Dame Nia Griffith MP.

The sombre service included Regimental Collects, prayers for those lost to war, the reading of names of the fallen by local school children, and commemorative speeches dedicated to preserving the memory of all those who have sacrificed their lives through the course of our history.

Wreaths were laid by the respective branches and veterans in attendance, and beautifully hand painted stones had been placed at the base of the monument.

The service was concluded with ‘The Last Post,’ a bugle call used at military funerals, and at ceremonies commemorating those who have died in war.

A booklet has been produced by the Kidwelly Local History Society which covers the Order of Service, a copy of the original programme of the Unveiling Ceremony in 1924 including the Roll Of Honour.

The Local History Society extend grateful thanks to Steven John whose considerable work in his book Kidwelly Roll Of Honour provides detailed information about those individuals named on the monument.  The booklet has been produced with Key Stage 2 schoolchildren in mind and Appendix 2 covers educational exercises.

Copies are available on request from the Kidwelly Local History Society.
