Crowds turn out for Llanelli’s Remembrance Day Service

The young and the old gathered at the Town Hall gardens in Llanelli today, Sunday (Nov 13) for the annual Remembrance Day Service.

Hundreds of people lined the streets to pay their respects and watch the incredible sight of what looked like one of the largest parades in many years.

Perhaps the unusual November sunshine brought more people out. It was a glorious day and the Town Hall looked wonderful. The sun shone brightly as a child barely a few weeks old was pictured with grandad Peter. It will be one of many to treasure as so many people stood with cameras and phones documenting the parade.

For many it was a time to reflect and remember the ultimate sacrifices made by so many. At the stroke of eleven the town fell silent .

The Last Post and Reveille were played  by Dylan Rolland, a 16 year old Sea Cadet from Llanelli as the standards were raised and prayers were offered by the Rev Eldon Philips Chaplain to the armed forces.

The voice of the drill sergeant major Andrew Brown now in his 8th year of the parade echoed around the War memorial ensuring that everyone marched in step.

Every year more people appear to come to pay their respects and honour the brave members of the armed forces.
The World War 2 veterans numbers are  decreasing  but the enthusiasm and support for the event is increasing and shows that Llanelli will not forget.

All those who have fought in conflict in more recent years were also remembered at newly installed memorials. The grass was littered with small wooden crosses and poppies.

Representatives from the armed forces, civic dignitaries and representatives of so many organisations from the town  placed wreaths.

Dignitaries included Llanelli’s MP Dame Nia Griffith,  Llanelli’s MS Lee Waters, Representatives of Carmarthenshire County Council and the  Town and Rural council.

Also in attendance today was the Deputy Lord Lieutenant Col David Mathias. You can watch the film of the event here.
