Football academy director thrilled to be part of Welsh Schools national win

For the first time in 41 years, the Welsh Schools U18s team has won the SAFIB Inspire Sports Centenary Shield.

Coleg Sir Gâr football academy director Jonathan Garcia is the assistant manager of the team and Coleg Sir Gâr football coach Martyn Bowles is the media officer and coach.

This national UK schools competition includes Wales, England, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and Scotland.

The performance from the Wales team in the competition final game against Republic of Ireland resulted in a win of 2-0, which led to Wales winning the tournament for the first time in 41 years .

The game against England succeeded all expectations with a 4-1 win, Scotland was beaten by 2-0 but the team lost to Northern Ireland by 3-0 in their first game of the season but went on to win three games on the bounce to take the shield.

The competition celebrates its 50th year in 2023 and assistant manager Jonathan Garcia with his other team colleagues, wants to drive the Wales team to success again. “The management and coaching team work very well together and I think that’s been part of the fantastic result we saw this year in winning the Centenary Shield.”
