Labour warns Farage in power would threaten clean energy jobs

Labour has today warned that if Nigel Farage’s Party ever came to power, almost a million jobs across the country in the clean energy economy — including 37,800 in Wales — could be threatened on day one.

Welsh Labour statement on clean energy economy

“The UK clean energy economy is booming thanks to the certainty and stability provided by the Government’s commitment to clean energy. Since July 2024, over £40 billion of private investment has been announced into the UK’s clean energy industries — helping to kick-start the economy and put more money in working people’s pockets, the first priority of the Labour Government’s Plan for Change.

“Data from CBI Economics (2025) show that almost one million full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs are currently supported by the clean energy economy — from offshore wind to electric vehicles, heat pumps to hydrogen. This includes 37,800 jobs in Wales.

“However, all of this investment would be at risk if Nigel Farage implemented his policies of punitive new taxes on investment in domestic clean energy, robbing the UK’s engineers, welders, and electricians of a new generation of job opportunities.

Polls show that support for Reform UK is rising

“Nigel Farage’s policies would also threaten the UK’s clean energy future — and the new jobs it will bring. The Climate Change Committee has found that between 135,000 to 725,000 net new jobs could be created in low-carbon sectors by 2030, in areas like offshore wind, hydrogen, grid expansion, and heat pump manufacture and installation. These future opportunities could be lost forever under Reform’s anti-investment stance.”

Rebecca Evans MS, Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Economy, said:

“Yet again, Nigel Farage has proven that he doesn’t know or care about Wales, and is only interested in turning back the clocks by flippantly threatening nearly 40,000 jobs in Wales with his war on clean energy.

“While he wants to send people back down the pits, only Welsh Labour is looking to the future and seizing the opportunities that come with the green revolution. Just last week we announced three new publicly-owned wind farms which have the potential to generate enough clean electricity to power a quarter of the homes in Wales.”

Labour’s Energy Minister Michael Shanks MP said:

“Nigel Farage’s war on clean energy is a war on jobs — and working people from Wales would lose jobs and opportunities if Farage’s Party was ever allowed to impose his anti-jobs, anti-growth ideology on the country.

“Labour was elected to deliver real change for communities, and we are securing the good jobs that can boost people’s livelihoods and rebuild our country’s industrial backbone. We won’t let Farage and his ideologues stand in the way of these jobs.”
