Neil Hamilton AM urges people to discover National Parks

NEIL Hamilton, Leader of UKIP Wales and AM for Mid & West Wales, is calling on constituents to head for their local national parks over Easter.

Mr Hamilton, Party Spokesman for Rural Affairs and Culture, is urging people to Discover National Parks Fortnight, a two week celebration across the UK, which runs until Sunday April 21.

He said:

“This fortnight is all about bringing families together to enjoy our stunning countryside and visit one of the UK’s 15 National Parks of which we have three in Wales, including two in my Mid & West Region, the Pembrokeshire Coast and the Brecon Beacons.

“Our national parks are unique and wonderful places to visit to enjoy wide open spaces and fresh air.  I am delighted to support such a worthwhile event and help raise awareness of the glories we have on our doorstep.

“This two week celebration and family festival has replaced the National Parks Week and will now be held annually to coincide with Easter holidays, which is a great idea.

“Many different events and experiences will take place in the next couple of weeks to inspire and encourage people of all ages to go outside, explore and learn more about these special areas.”

The Discover National Parks Fortnight started on Saturday April 6, and runs until Sunday April 22.

 This year’s celebration marks the 70^th Anniversary of the 1949 National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act that paved the way for the establishment of National Parks in the UK.

They offer infinite opportunities to explore, learn, relax, and unwind, whether it’s a gentle family walk with little ones exploring every tree and flower along the way, action adventures to tempt teens away from their phones or cultural events exploring the special history of the National Parks.

Chair of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, Gwyneth Hayward said: “We hope these 14 days of festivities will encourage more people to explore the world-class landscape on their doorstep and reconnect with nature during the Year of Discovery.

“Spending time in the great outdoors can boost your mental and physical health, so whether you take a walk on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, explore one of the area’s heritage sites or just take some time to switch off your screens and explore the countryside, there’s plenty of ways to take part in this fortnight of fun.”

The National Park Authority has a number of events, such as guided walks and wildlife watching, taking place across Discover National Parks Fortnight and throughout the school holidays.
