Nosferatu Night at St Mary’s Church

On Friday (18th October) St Mary’s Church in Kidwelly hosted its first film night, with hopes that they will become a regular event for the Kidwelly community.

A roaring success, large numbers of local residents occupied the pews to enjoy the classic Nosferatu – a silent film made 102 years ago.  Live organ accompaniment was provided by Mr Andy Pike, one of Llanelli’s well-known pianists who himself put together the music for the duration of the film – which was alternately suspenseful and dramatic, which included a few bars of occasional recognisable tunes for fun, for example: Money, Money, Money by Abba.

His efforts were recognised by loud applause and whoops of appreciation after the film. By modern standards, the film was only mildly scary and as such was suitable for accompanied children. Refreshments were available along with popcorn, other confectionery and a choice of hot and cold drinks before the start and during the intermission.

Fr Jim Flanagan thanked those who had helped put such a successful night together, the audience for their attendance and asked for suggestions for future film nights, for the shorter term, suggestions would need to be silent films for licensing reasons. He also emphasised that the church belonged to the town and the community, as such all were welcome and that the church was open to all.

The next film and date will be published on Facebook on the St Marys Church Kidwelly, St Teilo Mynydd Y Garreg & St Maelog Llandyfaelog page.
