Pub in Aberystwyth raises over £4,000 for Head and Neck Cancer Services

Aberystwyth pub The Hoptimist has raised an incredible £4,500 for Head and Neck Cancer Services at Hywel Dda University Health Board.

Mike Daniel, a regular in the pub, was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2022 and received outstanding care and treatment from the Head and Neck Cancer Services team.

Pub owner Lee Slaymaker said: “As Mike is a regular in the pub, we really wanted to help support the service that helped care and look after him following his diagnosis.

“We held several fundraising events last Christmas including a raffle and an auction which were really well supported by the local community.”

Mike said: “After being diagnosed with throat cancer in 2022 I was under the care of Hywel Dda’s Head and Neck Cancer Services team.

“I wanted to fundraise to give something back for all the care and support they have given me throughout my treatment. Lee and the team at The Hoptimist have been incredibly generous and supportive, I can’t thank them enough!”

The money was donated to Hywel Dda Health Charities, the official charity of Hywel Dda University Health Board. Funds donated to the charity support NHS services to provide services and activities above and beyond core NHS expenditure.

Alis Evans, Macmillan Head and Neck Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist, said: “As a team, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to The Hoptimist, Aberystwyth, Mike Daniel and the wider community for this spectacular amount raised for Hywel Dda Head and Neck Cancer Services.

“This donation will allow us to provide support and resources to patients and their families above and beyond what the NHS can normally provide.”
