Student Fire Safety Week – Encouraging Students to Consider Fire Safety

MAWWFRS offer information to students to assist them in staying safe in the home, whether living in halls of residence or private rented accommodation for the first time or older students returning in their second and third years.

Here are some simple steps that can be taken to ensure that students stay safe:

• Get to know your new property and develop an escape plan.
• Keep escape routes clear at all times for a quick but safe exit.
• Never ‘wedge’ fire doors open.
• Do not overload electrical sockets or adapters.
• Ensure you have working smoke alarms in your accommodation.
• Do not cover any smoke alarms.
• Never leave cooking unattended and keep appliances clean to prevent a fire from starting.
• Switch off all electrical items when not in use.
• Never charge electrical devices overnight.
• Don’t leave phones or tablets charging on soft furnishings such as beds, sofas and chairs.
• If you smoke, ensure cigarettes are extinguished properly. Or if you use e-cigarettes, be sure to only use the supplied charger.
• If a fire starts, GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL 999.
