Student Nurses and Lecturers walk Aberystwyth Promenade to raise funds for chemo unit in Bronglais

STUDENT nurses and lecturers from Aberystwyth University walked the Aberystwyth promenade to raise funds for Bronglais Hospital chemotherapy day unit.

The sponsored walk, which took place on 28th May 2023, saw student nurses and nursing lecturers walk the promenade 10 times.

Students and staff voted to support the chemotherapy day unit at Bronglais Hospital as the Aberystwyth University Charity of the Year 2022-23.

Funds raised by the University staff and students over the year will go towards enhancing the unit and providing services and activities which are beyond what the NHS can normally provide.

Gwenno Jones, a student representative for Mental Health Nursing at Aberystwyth University, said: “As the first nursing cohort of Aberystwyth University, it’s important that we support the local hospital, in particular the chemotherapy day unit as it’s such a vital unit to have in a very rural area.

“It’s also important to us to support the university’s chosen charity of the year as they have put in so much work to welcome us nurses to the area. Creating the nursing course in a town like Aberystwyth has allowed many local people to fulfil their dreams of becoming future nurses.”

Bridget Harpwood, Fundraising Officer, said: “‘It’s great to see the first cohort of student nurses getting behind Aberystwyth University’s Charity of the Year.

“Both Bronglais Hospital and the Chemotherapy Day Unit are very precious to the local people and surrounding communities. The fact that students are now also able to study here to become qualified nurses is brilliant for the local area.”
