Benches get new life at railway

The Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Railway have been successful in acquiring a quantity of ex mainline metal benches in a recent Network Rail Redundant Assets sealed bid auction.

These will now start a new life at the railway’s Cynheidre base offering much improved outdoor seating facilities for our customers on our popular open days. The twenty benches are to a 1960’s style and are painted in a green and white colour scheme which will fit in perfectly with the railway’s rural aspect.

The auction was won on 10th December 2021 with the benches to be collected from Euston in January. The Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Railway would like to thank Costain and L. Lynch Plant Hire for sponsoring and facilitating the transport to our west Wales site which was completed successfully in the last week of January 2022.

They will now be distributed to a number of different locations around the site. A railway spokesman commented ‘we are very pleased to receive these benches which will further enhance our site and visitor experience’ The railway will re-open with a gala running day on Saturday 26th March 2022 to kick start the new summer season with regular events then following through to October.

The railway is a charity run totally by volunteers. It is hoping to grow into a major tourist attraction for the Llanelli district and in order to reach our goals we need more volunteer help in all departments including operational, maintenance and restoration, and administration.

If you could spare a few hours for what is a most enjoyable pastime and worthwhile cause do not hesitate to get in touch. For more information or to volunteer please visit our website at https://www.llanellirailway.co.uk or Facebook page at www.facebook.com/llanellirailway
