Children attending a summer club at the Phoenix Centre in Townhill are making the most of the school holidays with food, friendship and plenty of activities, with dodgeball proving one of the biggest hits.
The centre is one of the community organisations being supported through Swansea Council’s #HereForYouThisSummer campaign, which is helping provide food, activities and support for residents during the school summer holidays.
The wider campaign is backed by almost £700,000 of funding and is supporting hundreds of groups and organisations across Swansea.
Cllr Rebecca Fogarty, Cabinet Member for Community Support, recently visited the Phoenix Centre to meet children and families taking part in the summer club.
Children at the centre enjoyed breakfast before heading out on a walk.
They then returned for games and activities with friends with many young people saying dodgeball was their favourite.
The council’s funding is helping organisations across the city offer welcoming places where children can eat, play, stay active and spend time with friends while families manage the extra costs that can come with the school holidays.
A total of 67 projects are helping provide food for school-aged children over the summer, while 120 successful bids are delivering free or low-cost activities for young people across Swansea.
Cllr Fogarty said: “I really enjoyed visiting the Phoenix Centre to meet the children and their families who are enjoying the activities and the healthy meals and snacks that are available with support from our #HereForYouThisSummer funding.
“The children and grown-ups said that it means they can get together and really enjoy the school holidays.
“While I was there, those taking part told me they enjoyed a healthy breakfast, went for a mile-long walk and then took part in fun activities with their friends.
“We know that the summer holidays can be difficult for some families because of the extra costs, especially when school meals are not available.
“I can’t thank the Phoenix Centre enough for the work they do, as well as all the other groups, clubs and organisations that are helping our young people and their families make the most of the summer.”
The #HereForYouThisSummer campaign brings together a wide range of support available to Swansea residents, including food provision, activities and community services.
The funding also supports the council’s wider aim of helping communities stay connected, supporting families and giving residents access to trusted help close to home.
