Whitestone Primary School in West Cross, is celebrating a strong Estyn inspection report that highlights its inclusive ethos, effective leadership and commitment to helping every pupil thrive.
Inspectors found the school is “highly inclusive where staff place the needs of pupils and their families at the heart of school life”, recognising the caring approach and strong support it provides for its community.
Inspectors highlighted the wide range of learning experiences available to pupils, noting that educational visits and visitors enrich their understanding of their local community, Wales and the wider world.
Creative opportunities in art and music were also recognised for contributing positively to pupils’ enjoyment of learning.
The report identifies a number of areas where pupils are achieving well.
It found that staff develop pupils’ literacy, numeracy and digital skills successfully, with younger children developing secure speaking, listening and early reading skills, while many older pupils read confidently and write successfully across a range of genres.
The school’s strong Welsh ethos was also noted, with pupils benefiting from opportunities to develop and use the Welsh language throughout school life.
One of the report’s standout findings relates to support for pupils with additional learning needs.
Estyn describes this provision as “a significant strength”, praising staff for identifying needs promptly, working closely with families and specialist agencies, and providing carefully targeted support that enables nearly all pupils to make strong progress.
Inspectors also highlighted the Specialist Teaching Facilities, describing them as “particularly effective” in providing highly individualised support while ensuring pupils are fully included in school life wherever appropriate.
The report praises the leadership of Headteacher Bethan Peterson, stating that “the headteacher provides purposeful leadership”, while staff are recognised for building positive relationships with pupils and creating “a supportive environment where they feel safe, valued and ready to learn”.
Mrs Peterson said: “We are incredibly proud of this report and the recognition it gives to our pupils, staff, governors and families. Creating a caring, inclusive environment where every child feels valued and supported is at the heart of everything we do. This outcome reflects the dedication of our whole school community and our shared commitment to helping every pupil achieve their very best.”
