Plaid Cymru urge Welsh Gov to safeguard national collections

PLAID Cymru are urging the Labour Welsh Government to safeguard collections for future generations and to retain staff.

Plaid Cymru’s spokesperson for Culture, Heledd Fychan MS, has said that “our national collections are at risk” due to proposed budget cuts by the Welsh Labour Government, and that jobs are “under threat.”

The proposed cuts will see organisations across the sector face a reduction of between 10.5% and 22% in their revenue budgets.

Recognising how important arts and culture are to Wales’ identity and economy, Plaid Cymru has said that “we should all be concerned” and is urging the Welsh Government to work with the sector to safeguard collections and the skilled workforce.

Plaid Cymru spokesperson for Culture, Heledd Fychan MS said:

“Our national collections are at risk. This will only worsen if the proposed cuts are implemented by the Labour Welsh Government, and will put jobs under threat.

“Given that the national collections belong to everyone in Wales, we should all be concerned.

“Arts and culture are not just nice to have when times are good – they are integral to our identity as well as our economy.

“I urge the Welsh Government to work with the National Library of Wales, Amgueddfa Cymru, and trade unions representing staff to safeguard the collections for future generations and ensure vital staff skills are retained.”
