Welsh Lib Dems call on Welsh Gov to implement targets in Child Poverty strategy

THIS week in the Senedd, the Welsh Liberal Democrats have called on the Welsh Government to implement targets in their Child Poverty strategy.

According to the Children’s Commissioner, 28% of children in Wales were living in poverty between 2019-2022. However, as this statistic predates the Cost-of-Living crisis, there are fears that this could be far higher.

The Welsh Lib Dems are now calling on the Welsh Government to implement targets to help eradicate child poverty.

Commenting, the Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats Jane Dodds MS said:

“We must act now, not tomorrow or the day after that, but now if we are being serious about eradicating child poverty here in Wales.

Every child living in poverty is a stain on the record of this Senedd, if we as elected officials and representatives of the people can’t come together and crack down on this issue, then I must ask why we’re all here in the first place?

No more empty words and unfulfilled promises, we need action.

At times it can feel as though the Welsh Labour Government’s approach towards this crisis is one which lacks ambition.

An ambition to set targets, to focus prioritises and catalyse action whilst also setting up some accountability.

Every year we wait without a robust framework is another year where we allow our most vulnerable to slip through the cracks.

I call on the Welsh Government to show some bravery and stop the needless suffering of thousands of children. Set out clear cut targets for us to achieve so that we can once and for all eradicate child poverty.”
