Carmarthen Market named best in Wales

IT’S no surprise to regular shoppers that Carmarthen Market is one of the best around, but now it’s official!

The market has just been named Best Market in Wales by Slow Food Cymru, an awards scheme that highlights ‘good, clean and fair’ markets, restaurants and independent food producers and traders across the country.

The awards are won by public vote, with no prior shortlisting.

And Carmarthen Market is not the only Carmarthenshire attraction to feature as a winner – Carmarthen’s Blasus won Best Cheesemonger, and Wrights Emporium, Llanarthne, won Best Deli.

Although dating back to Roman times, Carmarthen Market is now sited in a modern, airy hall.

Open six days a week, 9.30am-4.30pm, it offers some of the best local produce in Wales boasting a range of stalls selling everything from arts and crafts, antique and modern jewellery to locally produced meats, fruit and veg, cheeses and cakes.

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, the popular outdoor market brings in crowds with its interesting mix of goods and a Producer’s Market visits the town every Friday.

The market is owned and managed by Carmarthenshire County Council, with a lively and enthusiastic forum of traders that provide a unique atmosphere.

Cllr David Jenkins, Executive Board Member for Resources, said: “We are delighted that Carmarthen Market has been recognised in these national awards. The market has a special place in the hearts of many people with its fantastic range of produce and goods. Of course, the local traders and regular visitors are what really make the market such a fantastic success, and we’re grateful to everyone that voted for it to be recognised.”
