Red Line Protest to Pass Through Cardigan Town Centre

A community demonstration is planned for Cardigan (Aberteifi) in which participants will carry a 500-metre length of red material through the town’s streets in a show of solidarity with the people of Gaza.

The event, organised by local activists and residents, will see the so-called Red Line banner unfurled and carried as a visible symbol of protest against conditions in the Palestinian territory. Organisers describe it as part of a broader national and international movement using red material as a unifying motif for pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

The situation in Gaza

According to the UN agency UNRWA, between 7 October 2023 and late April 2026, more than 72,000 Palestinians had been killed in the Gaza Strip and a further 172,000 injured, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health. The conflict entered its third year with no end to hostilities in sight.

Most people across the Gaza Strip remain displaced, living in poor shelter conditions and exposed to rising public health risks, as well as ongoing strikes, shelling, and gunfire. Restrictions on the entry of generators, engine oil, and spare parts are driving widespread system failures, reducing health and sanitation services, debris removal, and the movement of humanitarian teams.

Humanitarian funding remains critically low, with less than ten per cent of the resources required for critical operations in 2026 secured so far this year. Two NGO workers were killed in separate incidents earlier this year, triggering the suspension of health and water services in the areas concerned.

The UN has also documented severe public health deterioration. UNRWA teams have observed a sharp increase in ectoparasitic skin diseases such as scabies, with the ability to control the problem constrained by severe shortages of pesticides and treatments.

Why people across the UK are protesting

Demonstrations in support of Palestinians have taken place across Britain since October 2023, with the question of UK arms exports to Israel a particular focus of public and political debate. The UK supplies millions of pounds’ worth of arms to Israel, and provides approximately 15 per cent of the components in the F-35 fighter jets used in airstrikes across the occupied Palestinian territory, including the rear fuselage, ejector seats, laser targeting systems, and the fan propulsion system.

In September 2024, the UK government recognised the risk that UK arms were being used in violation of international law in Gaza and announced some restrictions on direct arms sales to Israel. However, critics argue the measures did not go far enough. A subsequent report by Progressive International, the Palestine Youth Movement and Workers for a Free Palestine, using data from the Israeli Tax Authority, showed shipments of over 8,000 separate munitions from the UK to Israel in the period following the partial suspension.

A legal challenge to UK arms exports was brought by Palestinian human rights organisation Al-Haq and the Global Legal Action Network, but on 30 June 2025 two High Court judges refused the case, accepting the government’s arguments.

The issue has become increasingly politically sensitive for Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, with growing domestic criticism over the UK’s arms export policies. Groups such as Palestine Action have faced heightened legal scrutiny, including being proscribed as a terrorist organisation by the UK government in July 2025.

The Cardigan demonstration

Organisers say the Cardigan action is intended to draw public attention back to the situation in Gaza, which they argue has been overshadowed in recent news cycles by developments elsewhere in the Middle East. The demonstration also carries a domestic dimension, directed at the UK government over both its arms export policies and what organisers characterise as restrictions on the right to protest.

Members of the public are invited to take part and help carry the banner through the town.

Further details on the route and timing have not yet been announced publicly.
