This is not a coffee-fetching internship. From your first week, you will be out in the community, researching and writing stories that matter to the people of Carmarthenshire, producing content for one of the most active independent news platforms in West Wales, and building a portfolio of published work that will set you apart from the crowd when you take the next step in your career.

Carmarthenshire News Online covers the stories that shape life in Sir Gaerfyrddin: health, politics, environment, crime, community, heritage, and everything in between. We hold institutions to account, we give a voice to residents who need one, and we do it with the kind of on-the-ground journalism that national outlets simply cannot replicate. Now we are looking for someone who wants to be part of that.
“You will not just be shadowing. You will be taking a hands on approach to news writing and news publication.”
What You Will Learn and Do
Our intern will be immersed in the full range of skills that modern journalism demands. On the written side, you will research, interview and write news stories to publication standard, learning how to structure a breaking news report, a community feature, an editorial analysis, and a court report, each with its own discipline and its own rules.
Beyond the written word, you will gain hands-on experience in video production, capturing and editing content for our news platform. You will work on our podcast operation, developing audio reporting and production skills that are increasingly essential in the modern media landscape. You will learn news photography, understanding how the right image can tell the story a thousand words cannot.
Throughout all of it, you will be inside the workflow of a digital newsroom: pitching story ideas, working to deadlines, understanding how a story moves from a tip or a press release to a published, fact-checked article with your name on it.
There will be many opportunities for fieldwork, attending local and national events across Wales, including election counts, agricultural shows, political rallies as well as remembrance day parades.

Who We Are Looking For
We are not looking for a finished journalist. We are looking for someone with the hunger to become one. The right candidate will have a genuine passion for local news and the issues that affect real communities. They will write clearly and communicate confidently. They will be reliable, curious, and prepared to work hard in an environment where no two days are the same.
This opportunity is open to students, recent graduates, young people taking their first step into the industry, and anyone looking to make a career change into journalism. What matters is not your CV. It is your appetite for the work.
