Plaid MS praise for Llanelli town centre initiative

Ahead of the Plaid Cymru Spring Conference in Llanelli on the 3rd and 4th of March, Cefin Campbell, Plaid Cymru Member of the Senedd called by Ymlaen Llanelli to learn more about the work the group are undertaking in Llanelli to build a more vibrant town centre.

Ymlaen Llanelli was founded in 2015, as part of a Business Improvement District (BID) – led by, and funded by local businesses in the town. The This BID aims to improve Llanelli as a place to work, live and visit by delivering a targeted programme of services.

Since it’s inception, Llanelli Ymlaen regularly hold free events in the town centre, from huge annual festivals to community street parties, open-air cinemas and children’s events. The events draw in thousands of visitors to the town, and its recent successes include the Llanelli 80s Festival, Llanelli Vintage Festival, and their biggest event, Llanelli Food and Drink Festival.

As well as delivering events, Ymlaen Llanelli has also led on initiatives that improve access and enhance the town centre experience – including free parking days, hanging flower baskets, and working with Dyfed-Powys Police to alleviate some issues in the town centre.

Commenting following his visit, Cefin Campbell, Plaid Cymru Member of the Senedd for Mid & West Wales said:

“I welcomed the opportunity to meet with Ymlaen Llanelli and learn more about their brilliant projects and events that help increase footfall to the town and provide businesses with the exposure to strengthen their customer base.

We all know that recent years have been a difficult time for our town centres – from the Covid-19 pandemic to the intensifying cost-of-living crisis. The work Ymlaen Llanelli have been doing in light of these challenges cannot be understated and provides an important financial boost to the town centre, as well as enhancing the visitor experience for locals and visitors alike”.
