Reform Councillor addresses Llanelli Market Plans

Reform Councillor Michelle Beer has addressed the recent proposals for the future of Llanelli Market. In her statement, Michelle said:

“I was invited to the stakeholder meeting held on Tuesday, 22nd July, at Ffwrnes and it was a moment, to hear about ambitious plans to relocate Llanelli market. This initiative, would be funded by a substantial multi-million-pound funding pot from the UK Government, a great but time-sensitive opportunity to breathe new life into our town. The proposed redevelopment is not just a vision but a tangible plan that could redefine Llanelli’s future.

“The initial proposals unveiled at the meeting are nothing short of exciting. They outline a vibrant, modern development that would enhance the town centre’s appeal, drawing in visitors, supporting local businesses, and creating a dynamic hub for our community.

“Far from being a top-down imposition, this project seemed to be in collaboration. Market traders were informed in a dedicated meeting prior to the stakeholder event, ensuring they were understood the need for the relocation and for their voices to be heard in shaping the layout, functionality, and overall design of the new market space moving forward. These were just the first meetings, however, it seems all stakeholders all of whom will have opportunities to contribute as the plans progress.

“The potential benefits of this redevelopment are immense. Relocating the market could catalyse further regeneration across the town centre, addressing long-standing challenges like declining footfall and outdated infrastructure. A revitalised market, thoughtfully designed with trader input, could enhance its appeal, attract new vendors, and create a more vibrant shopping experience.

“However, it also seems this opportunity hinges on urgency. The UK Government’s funding is contingent on meeting the Spring 2028 deadline, and delays in submitting the pre-planning application could mean Llanelli misses out on this critical investment. Llanelli cannot afford to miss out on this transformative funding pot due to indecision or political point gaining.

“The stakeholder meeting was a strong starting point, providing information on the need for relocation and the exciting options available. From what I heard and saw, it set the tone for a collaborative process, ensuring that traders, residents, and stakeholders are not just informed but actively involved in shaping this development.

“This looks like a once-in-a-generation chance to redevelop Llanelli’s town centre, starting with the market relocation, and I am confident that by acting decisively, Llanelli can deliver a project that will make our town prouder, stronger, and more vibrant for years to come. I would say, let’s work together to seize this opportunity and show what Llanelli working together is capable of achieving.”
