Generous locals raise over £16k for flood-hit families

MORE than £16,000 has been shared out amongst people affected by last October’s floods, thanks to the generosity of Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion communities.

A Llandysul and Pontweli Flood Assistance Appeal was launched by volunteers in November to raise funds and collect donations to support those faced with repairing, rebuilding and refurnishing their homes and businesses after the devastation of Storm Callum – the worst flooding to hit the area in more than 30 years.

Carmarthenshire County Council and Ceredigion County Council collected donations from people who held fundraisers, wrote cheques or donated to the fund online.

In total, £16,144.42, was collected and is now being shared equally amongst the 44 people who came forward for assistance.

Such was the strength of community support, some of those affected by the floods and eligible for support from the fund, turned it down saying they felt others needed the assistance more.

Those offered the assistance were households, community enterprises and businesses in the flood area, between Abercerdin to Llandysul Bridge; Wills Cleaning Services to Llandysul Bridge; Swain Commercials on the Pencader Road to Llandysul Bridge, and a small number of properties upstream on the Carmarthenshire side.

The funds administrators – Cllr Keith Evans, Cllr Linda Evans, Cllr Ken Howells, Meinir Davies, Robert Jenkins and Rev Gareth Reid – have thanked people for their kind generosity, and the businesses and local authorities for their assistance.

Every penny raised is being distributed, with no administrative fees will be deducted.
