Police investigate report of sexual assault on Newport Highstreet

GWENT Police are investigating reports of a sexual assault in Newport. Gwent Police have issued the following statement:

“We’re investigating a report of a sexual assault in High Street, Newport, believed to have happened in The Greyhound pub at around 11.55pm on Saturday 9 September.

“We’re investigating a report of a sexual assault in High Street, Newport, believed to have happened in The Greyhound pub at around 11.55pm on Saturday 9 September.

“The victim, a teenage girl, was sexually assaulted by man and she is receiving support from specialist officers.

“A 28-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman, both from the Newport area, were arrested in connection with this.

“Both have been released on police bail while the investigation continues.”

Detectives are appealing for information from anyone who may have seen anything that could help with the investigation.

They want to hear from anyone who was in The Greyhound pub between 11.30pm on Saturday 9 September and 12.30am Sunday 10 September.

Detective Superintendent Michelle Chaplin, leading the investigation, said: “We understand that when a crime such as this is reported in a local community, residents can become concerned.

“I’d like to reassure you that this appears to be an isolated incident and our enquiries are continuing.”
