THE dedication of a new Royal British Legion standard and the reopening of a branch of the Royal British Legion in Pontarddulais brought out huge crowds onto the streets of the town today, Sunday (Apr 7).
Hundreds of serving and veteran members of the armed forces and hundreds of army, navy, air, fire and police cadets as well as numerous community organisations joined together to parade through the town, not once, but twice.
Crowds lined the streets to watch the parade led by a band from the air cadets. Following the first march around the town a service was held at St Michaels Church led by the Rev’d Dr. John Gillibrand.
The new Chairman of the branch, Anthony Pitman read the exhortation. The last post and Reveille was played by Mr Neil Palmer of Pontarddulais Town Band.
A number of dignitaries were in attendance including the Lord Lieutenant Byron Lewis, the Lord Mayor of the County and City of Swansea Cllr David Phillips and the High Sheriff of West Glamorgan Henry Gilbert, Rebecca Evans AM and Pontarddulais Town Mayor Clive Mathias.
Following the parade a reception was held at Pontarddulais Rugby Club. Pontarddulais town Band were on hand to provide the entertainment.
Elis Lock was one of the youngest in the parade. His father is on a tour of duty in Estonia at present.
