Huw Thomas today called on the Plaid Cymru Government to respect last week’s Senedd vote by providing details on the establishment of a School Support Staff Negotiating Body (SSSNB).
These questions follow a successful Opposition Day motion put forward by Welsh Labour, which secured cross-party support to address long-standing pay inequities for school staff.
During questions to the Cabinet Minister for Effectiveness and the Constitution, Huw Thomas questioned the government’s commitment to school support staff.
“Can you confirm that as the Cabinet Minister responsible for the legislative agenda, you are respecting the Senedd’s wishes and have begun preparing legislation for a School Support Staff Negotiating Body?”
The proposal for the SSSNB gained significant traction, receiving votes in favour from four of the parties represented in the Senedd, with the Senedd passing the motion. If implemented, the body would bring Wales in line with England, who have already legislated to create a School Support Staff Negotiating Body for workers in England.
The establishment of the SSSNB was a key pledge in the Welsh Labour manifesto and has been a core campaign by trade unions UNISON and GMB.
Welsh Labour’s spokesperson for Finance, Democracy, Citizenship and the Welsh Language further pressed for unambiguous assurances that all manifesto commitments would appear in their Programme For Government in the form that they appear in their manifesto.
Plaid Cymru’s Cabinet Minister for Effectiveness and the Constitution declined the opportunity to commit to their own manifesto pledges making their way to the Programme for Government.
