Lib Dems warn small businesses unsupported by new budget

THE Welsh Liberal Democrats have warned that Welsh Government plans to reduce business rate relief for pubs, shops, and restaurants from 75% to 40% will hit jobs and communities across the country.

It remains at 75% in England, where business rates are set by the UK government.

The party had set out extending business rates relief for a further year as a priority for the budget.

The party has also criticised cuts to apprenticeships which could see 10,000 fewer new apprentices able to start next year, contrary to the Welsh Government’s skills commitment.

Commenting, leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats Jane Dodds MS said:

“I have heard from many business owners who have warned that this could be the final nail in the coffin for many small businesses across the country.

The Welsh Labour Government and Plaid Cymru have failed to recognise the importance of our small businesses and the critical role they play in supporting local jobs and communities.

Business rates relief is the biggest tool Welsh Government has in its toolbox to help businesses, and the government and their Plaid Cymru partners have chosen not to put that tool to best use at a time when businesses are on the brink.”
