Welsh Government respond to comments made by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on 20mph default speed limit

THE Welsh Government have responded to comments regarding the new 20mph default speed limit made by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak whilst being interviewed by Laura Kuenssberg on her talk show ‘Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg.’

The Prime Minister referred to the new default speed limit as a ‘blanket restriction’ which the Welsh Government have strongly refuted as misleading.

Mark Drakeford has said that he is disappointed that the Prime Minister is ‘misleading people on the 20mph whether intentionally or inadvertently.’

A Welsh Government Spokesperson has said:

“It is profoundly disappointing the prime minister is inadvertently or intentionally, choosing to mislead people about the introduction of 20mph.

“It is not a blanket restriction. Speed limits on a great number of roads in Wales are unchanged and journey times take around a minute longer. This will save lives and make our communities safer.”
