TODAY (22nd January 2024) the Welsh Liberal Democrats have accused the Labour party in Westminster of holding Wales back.
The comments come after the Labour Shadow Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens dismissed calls for the devolution of policing in Wales.
Commenting, the leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats Jane Dodds MS said:
“The Labour party in Westminster have always been a roadblock when it comes to devolving further powers to Wales, and unfortunately it seems as though this will continue to be the case for the near future.
This intervention by the Shadow Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens has shown that we can expect more of the same from a Labour Government in Westminster.
A government who, much like its Conservative predecessor’s, is unwilling to move the goalposts when it comes to offering more control on Welsh issues to the people of Wales.
Our current shared judicial system with England simply doesn’t work, how can we expect Westminster to make the right decisions on the needs of police forces here in Wales? Especially when they have no way of grasping the real issues facing communities in this country.
The Welsh Labour Government have put themselves forward as being willing to take on policing as a devolved power, so why aren’t their colleagues in Westminster willing to support them?
Further conflicting messages from a party that is more divided than it likes to admit.”
