WELSH Liberal Democrats demand action on homelessness crisis this winter
Today (11th December), the Welsh Liberal Democrats have demanded action on tackling the crisis of homelessness this winter.

According to a report from BBC Wales over 139,000 people, including at least 34,000 children, were waiting for social housing in Wales.

Across Wales and England, so-called no-fault evictions (where tenants are forced out of their homes when the landlord decides to sell-out) are at a seven-year high.

Commenting, leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats Jane Dodds MS said:

“It really is heartbreaking to hear some of these stories from people who have been forced out of their homes through no fault of their own.

It is particularly devastating to hear these stories coming from children, innocent of the indifference that has forced them and their families to seek help from elsewhere.

It is true that councils across Wales are facing a funding crisis caused by a UK Government who are more interested in wasting away money on unlawful schemes than giving funds to local authorities.

But we need to see some innovation from our local councils, so that we can overcome the hurdles placed in front of us by the Tories and start providing homes for people at pace and at scale.

Behind every statistic on homelessness is a person or family crying out for help.

We as a nation must be compassionate towards those in need of our help, not just during the festive period but year-round.”
