Five projects get UKSPF money to boost adult numeracy skills in Ceredigion

FIVE projects have received Shared Prosperity Fund (Levelling Up) grants to help people manage their money and improve their wellbeing.

The award of up to £5 million has been made by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund under its Multiply (improving numeracy skills) theme and is administrated by the Cynnal y Cardi Team at Ceredigion County Council.

The UKSPF is a central pillar of the UK government’s Levelling Up agenda and a significant component of its support for places across the UK. It provides three years funding for local investment. The Mid Wales Region has been allocated £42 million from 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2025 and £14 million allocated to Ceredigion.

The primary goal of the UKSPF is to build pride in place and increase life chances across the UK.

Councillor Clive Davies, Ceredigion Cabinet Member for the Economy and Regeneration, said: “Congratulations to the projects that have been successful in this latest funding round, these add to the already funded activities across Ceredigion providing services and support to our communities and businesses. The projects that have been successful under the Multiply (improving numeracy skills) theme are:

Jig-So Cardigan Family Centre
Jig-So’s Un, Dau, Tri project will provide parent/carers with opportunities for meaningful participation in number based activities to develop skills and confidence. Jig-so will provide courses, sessions and 1:1 activity to develop numerical literacy in an informal and enjoyable way that in turn boosts parents and carer’s ability to use maths in their daily life, at home, to support their children and at work. In addition, support and advice to address financial management and debt will support household budgeting and low-income families, leading to improved wellbeing.

Cymunedau’n Cyfrif
Cymunedau’n Cyfri Communities Count will be administered by CAVO as an enabling fund to support the delivery of community activities which improve numeracy skills. Courses will also support people to increase their ability to cope with escalating cost of living challenges covering topics such as financial budgeting, cooking on a budget and understanding energy costs. Activities will be delivered through a network of identified Community Hubs across Ceredigion along with outdoor settings such as community gardens and woodlands. Online opportunities will also be offered. Links will be established with Adult Learning Providers in Ceredigion to encourage referrals and signposting.

Mid Wales Multiply Parents Programme
Equal Education Partners Ltd. A hybrid programme, comprising both online and face-to-face delivery, supported by an on-demand online learning platform. Courses for parents wanting to increase their numeracy skills in order to help their children and help with their own progression. Delivery of the programme will be available bilingually and will comprise a combination of in-person and online classes, as well as self-directed study from our online learning platform. The programme will focus upon familiarisation with the Maths/numeracy content of the Curriculum for Wales as well as upskilling with contemporary pedagogical approaches and techniques.

Money Mystery
The Family Place. This supportive four session course will focus on practical, daily living issues involving money, designed specifically for adults who may find it hard. The aim is to genuinely engage the participants, help them feel supported enough to be curious about the financial practicalities of daily living, and give them confidence using maths skills. The course includes budgeting and planning a mystery trip, which they then attend. Increased confidence may also encourage them to make further steps towards maths qualification in the future.

Multiply
Coleg Ceredigion. Coleg Ceredigion propose the delivery of a multi-faceted, flexible and bespoke model of numeracy skills that is Multiply. Aligning with ongoing work in the community, Multiply will deliver a programme of numeracy training and qualifications to meet the needs of employers and employees, both within the private and public sectors. This will be achieved through effective employer engagement and work force development.
