A FREE school holiday breakfast club has been launched in a deprived Llanelli ward by two leading town coiuncillors.
Lliedi ward town councillors Andrew Bragoli and Shaun Greaney have won the support of Tesco, and volunteers, to start providing the free breakfast food and drink at the 310,000 thousand pound recently revamped town council-run Penygaer Changing Rooms, beginning this half-term.
Free food and beverages will be up for grabs during half-term, with the first breakfasts being provided on on Wednesday, October 30, and Friday, November 1, from 10am to 12 mid-day.
The new breakfast club follows the success of a similar club launched by Tyisha Positive Action Group and led by by fellow town councillors Suzy Curry, John Prosser and Andre McPcPherson, at Paddock Street Hall on Tuesdays and Thursdays, between 10am and noon.
The Tyisha school holiday breakfast club was established for the first-time in this year’s summer holiday.
Cllr Greaney said: “We’re determined to help the children in our area. We’ve distributed leaflets to Ysgol Penygaer, Ysgol Dewi Sant and Ysgol Heol Goffa inviting the children to ask a relative to bring them for the breakfasts where they can treat themselves to free food and beverages.
“The Caru Lliedi community group has had support from Llanelli Town Council to help put on this service for our area and we have been lucky enough to secure the kind support of Llanelli Tesco community champion Lisa Lewis.
“Everyone knows the cost-of-living has been hitting families in particular so we’re doing our best to rally round.”
Cllr Bragoli, who is the chair of Caru Lliedi, said: “The Welsh Government has provided millions of free school meals but there was a gap during school holidays and some children were going hungry.
“It’s a proven fact that some people are struggling to make ends meet but our breakfast club is free to any accompanied schoolchildren.
“As well as Tesco and the Town Council, we are grateful to our volunteers for helping us.”
