The news comes as a protest camp set up to oppose the controversial Hywel Dda University Health Board decision to close the MIU at night temporarily from November 1 goes into its second week.
Campaigners argue that the move – which they fear could become permanent – may result in the loss of lives.
Save Our Services Prince Philip Hospital Action Network (SOSPPAN) chairman Deryk Cundy said the public was vehemently opposed to the downgrading of the MIU.
“It is an absolute outrage that they are looking to reduce hours at the MIU without any level of consultation. People are literally furious with the decision and we have had overwhelming support for our fight,” he said.
Many shops in the town centre are collecting signatures and county councillors Rob and Nysia Evans have amassed over 3,000 names between them at a stall in the centre.
‘The unit is literally a lifesaver. People can have an anaphylactic shock and they could die on the way to Glangwili, whereas their lives would be saved if they were treated at Prince Philip Hospital,: said councillor Evans, who is a registered paramedic.
“People can also die of asthma attacks if they’re not treated quickly, to name just two straightforward scenarios.”
SOSPPAN committee member Shaun Greaney (pictured standing) said: ‘It is deplorable that the Healthboard hasn’t even sought to consult the people of Llanelli on this very serious issue. It seems to me they are acting as judge, jury and executioner.”
